There are many recipe tips available online, on cookery programmes and even in cookery books. When I first learned how to cook, I was in need of all the recipe tips I could possibly get my hands on. Throughout the years, I have acquired many a useful recipe tip, and use them frequently. For example, when making pastry, it is so easy to make up an extra batch as it freezes very well, particularly short crust and filo pastries. These make fantastic bases to pies and desserts and all you need to do is defrost them in advance, and you have a ready made pastry the next time a recipe calls for it. The same applies for a lot of recipes or dishes that you make regularly as so many of them can be frozen and will keep well in the freezer until you plan on using it. Over Christmas or Thanksgiving when you may have surplus turkey left over, instead of discarding it, cooked turkey will keep well in the freezer, for approximately three months.
My grandmother passed on invaluable recipe tips to my mother, who in turn passed them on to me. One of the recipe tips I remember to this day is to add a teaspoon of water when cooking/frying ground beef as it helps to separate the excess oil that occurs naturally in meat away from the beef itself, so it can be drained off. There are many other useful recipe tips I have picked up from various sources, such as grating cheddar cheese in bulk and keeping it in a plastic sandwich bag in the refrigerator and preparing your own bags of mixed salad. It’s surprising but if you do these things yourself you are not only saving time but saving yourself money too, as grated cheese and ready made bags of salad are more expensive to buy as is than prepare yourself at home.
Recipe tips giving came out big time after the recipe programmes were popularized in various satellite and cable TV channels, and slowly the trend grew bigger and faster, wit each channel borrowing chefs from the biggest hotels in the country to deliver those recipe tips to their viewers. Slowly this made the chefs hugely popular among common people, and some went out to become family in people’s drawing rooms along with other contemporary celebrities. They took this opportunity to publish some recipe books of their own name with the help of famous publishers, and those made huge money as well.
